Ingredients

  • 400 gram spaghetti
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 500 gram tomatoes, peeled and diced
  • 2 tsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water or broth
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp dried thyme or basil
  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves

Instructions

  • Peel and finely chop the onion and garlic. Wash the tomatoes if fresh, and cut them into small cubes.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil to prepare the spaghetti.
Heat olive oil over medium heat, add the onion, and sauté until translucent. Then add the minced garlic and stir for a minute until fragrant.
Add the diced tomatoes and tomato paste to the pot. Then add water or broth, sugar, salt, black pepper, and dried thyme. Let the mixture boil for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens.
While the sauce is cooking, boil the spaghetti, drain it, and add it directly to the sauce. Gently toss to coat the spaghetti entirely with the sauce.

To save time, you can substitute fresh tomatoes with canned ones.
Add minced meat or chicken to the sauce for extra protein richness. For a sharper taste, include a pinch of dried red chili flakes or hot sauce.
Experiment with fresh herbs or various cheeses to explore new flavors. If you prefer a creamier texture, add a bit of heavy cream or ricotta cheese to the sauce.
